We are seeking an experienced, dedicated, and compassionate Veterinary Assistant or Technician to join our team at Flatt Veterinary Clinic. The successful candidate will assist our veterinarians and technicians in providing excellent care to pets, while maintaining a clean and organized environment. The role requires someone who is passionate about animal care and has previous experience working in a veterinary clinic setting.
As a Veterinary Assistant or Technician at Flatt Veterinary Clinic, you will perform a wide variety of duties, from assisting in medical procedures and diagnostics to client communication and administrative tasks. You will work closely with our veterinary team to ensure that pets receive the highest standard of care in a friendly and efficient manner.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Support
- Patient Care: Assist with patient intake, including taking histories, preparing animals for examination, and ensuring that patients are comfortable.
- Diagnostics: Aid in the collection of samples for laboratory testing, including blood, urine, and fecal samples. Prepare diagnostic equipment and support in diagnostic procedures (x-rays, ultrasounds, etc.).
- Medical Procedures: Assist veterinarians during surgical procedures, including preparation of instruments, monitoring anesthesia, and post-operative recovery.
- Laboratory Work: Perform in-house lab tests, such as blood counts, urinalysis, and cytology.
- Pharmacy Support: Prepare and dispense medications as directed by the veterinarian. Maintain accurate records of prescriptions and dosage instructions.
- Vital Signs Monitoring: Take and record vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration) for patients during exams and before, during, and after procedures.
- Cleaning and Sterilization: Maintain cleanliness and sterilization of examination rooms, surgical suites, and instruments according to clinic protocols.
Client Communication & Education
- Client Interaction: Serve as a liaison between veterinarians and clients. Provide updates on patient care and answer questions about treatments, medications, and home care instructions.
- Client Education: Educate clients on preventive care, vaccinations, nutrition, and overall animal wellness.
- Appointment Scheduling: Assist with client scheduling, follow-up calls, and reminders for vaccinations, wellness exams, and procedures.
Administrative and Clerical Support
- Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and detailed medical records for patients, ensuring compliance with clinic protocols and legal requirements.
- Inventory Management: Assist in the management of inventory, ensuring adequate stock levels for medications, supplies, and equipment.
- Financial Transactions: Process payments and assist with billing when needed.
Team Support
- Collaboration: Work closely with veterinary technicians, veterinarians, and other staff members to provide exceptional care to animals.
- Training and Mentorship: Provide support and guidance to less experienced staff members, including veterinary assistants and technicians, as needed.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
Required:
- Experience: A minimum of 2 years of veterinary assistant experience in a clinical setting (or equivalent hands-on training).
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of a formal veterinary assistant program or certification preferred.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in veterinary software (e.g., AVImark, Cornerstone), ability to handle animals safely and calmly, knowledge of medical terminology, and familiarity with basic lab and diagnostic procedures.
- Communication Skills: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to educate clients and interact with a diverse team.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and restrain animals, stand for long periods, and perform physical tasks such as cleaning and sanitizing.

Preferred:
- Certifications: Certification as a Veterinary Assistant (CVA) or equivalent is a plus.
- Experience with Specialized Treatments: Knowledge in anesthesia, dentistry, radiology, or surgery support.
